Borno State government has warned against the consumption of vegetables from areas that have been flooded saying such edibles have been contaminated by dead bodies, seawage and dangerous chemicals.
According to a statement posted on its Facebook page Tuesday, the Borno State Ministry of Information and Internal Security said citizens need to avoid consuming eddibles from the affected areas to prevent falling ill.
“Due to the recent flood disaster, vegetables from flooded areas are seriously contaminated with harmful substances, including sewage, dead bodies, chemicals, and bacteria.
“Consuming these contaminated vegetables can lead to serious health risks, including waterborne diseases, food poisoning, and other health complications.
“To protect your health and safety, we urge you to avoid buying vegetables from flooded areas; only purchase vegetables from trusted sources and reputable markets; ensure that all vegetables are properly washed and cleaned before consumption,” the statement read.
Over one million persons have either been displaced or affected by the flood caused by excessive rainful and the collapse of the Alau dam in Maiduguri, the State capitol.
More than 30 persons are confirmed to have died even as the State governor Babagana Zulum stated that the number of casuality could only be known when the flood receedes.
