A security guard at the Orchid Farm in the Yauri LGA of Kebbi Usman Maigadi has been mauled to death by a mother hippopotamus.
The farm is owned by Muhammad Abdullahi, Emir of Yauri.
Maigadi was attacked on Sunday while fishing in the Yauri River in Tillo village.
Eyewitnesses said the animal probably attacked in self-defense, after perceiving the deceased as a threat to its offspring.
Abubakar Shu’aibu, chairman of Yauri LGA, said the deceased has been laid to rest in Yauri in accordance with Islamic rites.
Nasir Idris, governor of Kebbi, expressed heartfelt condolences to Yauri Emirate and the deceased’s family in a statement by Ahmed Idris, his spokesperson.
“Idris urged the emirate and members of the deceased family to take heart and accept the will of the Almighty in good faith,” the statement reads. NAN
