Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara said Tuesday the hoodlums who burnt down Local Government secretariats in Ikwerre, Emohua, and Eleme will not go unpunished.
Cashing in on police withdrawal from the local governments secretariats they had sealed up since June, some thugs allegedly acting the script of former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike stormed the premises of the local governments in protest against the Rivers Local Government elections last Saturday and set fires to the buildings.
Fubara while swearing in four commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt said: “We won’t stand by and watch political thugs wreak havoc in Rivers State.
“Those behind these attacks will account for their atrocities.
“I said it before it happened. Those behind this are unhappy and have gone to extreme lengths to sow discord among our people.
“But we won’t allow this to go unpunished. We will work with security agencies to uncover those responsible and ensure they face justice.”
He urged the people of Rivers to remain calm in face of the political crisis that has rocked the State, since he fell-out with Mr. Wike who insisted on running the State from Abuja where he is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
“We must remain peaceful, even though we are angry. Meeting violence with violence will only make us the greatest losers.”
