Former chairman of the National Electoral Commission Professor Humphrey Nwosu has died at 83.
Prof. Nwosu passed away peacefully in a Virginia, USA hospital. He was famous for delivering the June 12, 1993 election, which was won by Chief MKO Abiola, but it was annulled by former Nigeria military President Ibrahim Babangida.
It was regarded as the best election ever conducted in Nigeria. Professor Nwosu’s reign at the electoral body, which later transformed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, lasted from 1989 to 1993.
He introduced the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system, which significantly transformed the electoral process in Nigeria.
In July 2024, the House of Representatives urged President Bola Tinubu to honour Nwosu for his instrumental role in conducting what is considered the most credible election in Nigeria’s post-independence history.
