Alex Ikwechegh representing Aba South/ Aba North in the House of Representatives seems to have bitten more than he can chew when he assaulted a cab driver at his residence in Abuja on Sunday.
During Tuesday’s plenary session the hurly-burly by Ikwechegh was brought up for discuss in motion moved by House Leader Julius Ihnovbere. He said the conduct of Hon Ikwechegh who slapped and threatened to make the Uber driver disappear brought the House into disrepute.
Though Ikwechegh has tendered a public apology and also said sorry to his colleagues on the floor of the House, his matter was referred to the House ethics and privileged committee for legislative action to be taken against him.
“We are guided by our rules. Our rule is that if the dignity of the parliament is ridiculed, we investigate through the eyes of justice.
“It is not good for us to judge. Ikwechegh’s appeal was very emotional, touching, and remorseful. But that is not enough. Our rules must be complied with.
“He will go and sit with the Ethics and Privileges Committee for him to be heard,” said Benjamin Kalu deputy speaker of the House of Reps.
