The spate of individuals getting multiple wives at the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Borno State is giving governor Babagana Zulum concerns.
Zulum expressed worry about the development in terms of over population, economic strain on Borno State and more vexing for him was that politicians and religious organisations are unwilling to take steps to tackle the growing trends. The governor gave an example of an individual who had one wife, but he now married to four women in the camp.
“The question is, which Islamic teacher has spoken out against this? Which member has kicked against this situation?” the Governor asked.
“All they (politicians) say is, ‘Ha, I will not talk.’ Rather, they are concerned with contesting and winning their elections. They refuse to speak out so that the IDPs will not vote against them,” Zulum bared his mind in a TikTok video shared by Kawu Garba.
Following the Boko Haram uprising in the State over 2 million people became internally displaced, over in recent times the number has reduced to between 300,000 and 400,000 and the government seems overwhelmed catering for the needs of these people.
