Miss Universe second runner up and Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, Chidinma Adetshina said she is relocating to Nigeria from South Africa and also ending her participation in beauty pageants.
Adetshina who was born in Soweto to Nigerian and Mozambican parents was hounded out of the Miss South Africa contest because of her heritage in August, she was then invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria, she won and went on to represent the country at the Miss Universe contest last Sunday in Mexico.
While she was in Mexico, the South African authorities cancel her national identity documents and that of her mother because they refuse to appear before a committee to justify why they should still hold South Africa citizenship. Chidimma Adetshina said she was in Lagos at the same period she was asked to appear. Some group even called for her disqualification from the pageant.
“I have already decided that I want to relocate to Nigeria.
“I haven’t seen my family yet. I’m really looking forward to that and I guess when we do meet, we’ll be able to make this decision, because it is a hasty one.
“I don’t have any animosity towards South Africa. Because at the end of the day it is still a place that I call home, no matter how painful it is to say it.”
Speaking on her future participation in pageants she added: I’m really done with pageantry. I want to focus on myself and establish who I am. And forward my education as well.”
For the next year, though, Adetshina will be travelling the world with the Miss Universe organisation.
She also hopes to bring her continent and the two countries she holds dear together: “I will have this opportunity to unite not only Nigeria and South Africa, but also the whole of Africa,” she said.
