Victor Boniface has drawn the ire of Bayer Leverkusen and coach Xabi Alonso after a video online showed him driving while using his phone.
The now deleted video posted by Nigerian rapper Zoro Swagbag had the Super Eagles striker driving his Mercedes-AMG at 140km per hour and at the same time reading comments from his Instagram on Bayer Leverkusen’s starting line-up before their Champions League match against Salzburg.
Driving while using the phone in German is punishable by a minimum fine of €128.50 under the 2024 regulations. Boniface was involved in a car accident as a passenger just six weeks ago, escaping with minor injuries after the car overturned.
“It’s obviously not good, and it’s not allowed either. That doesn’t have to happen,” said coach Alonso
“I haven’t seen Boni yet. He knows, but we have to tell him again. That’s not right.”
Bayer Leverkusen said they are looking into the matter. “If the incident is confirmed we will talk to Victor as soon as possible.
“He is not just a role model… it is fundamentally about not endangering himself and other people on the road.”
