US outgoing President Joe Biden has pardoned his son Hunter after he was convicted on gun and tax-related federal charges, amid earlier promises against such a move.
Biden said Hunter’s conviction was a miscarriage of justices and he hopes Americans will understand. But President-elect Donald Trump who will take over next month disagree with the move saying the justice department need to be fixed.
“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” Biden president said in a statement.
Biden pointed out that the charges came about “only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.
“I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision,” Biden added.
Reacting to the pardon Hunter Biden told the Associated Press: “I have admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction _ mistakes that have been exploited to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport,” he was quoted as saying.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Trump slammed what they called the Democrat-controlled justice system but didn’t appear to disagree with the decision.
“The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system,’ Trump spokesman Steven Cheung told DailyMail.com.
“That system of justice must be fixed, and due process must be restored for all Americans, which is exactly what President Trump will do as he returns to the White House with an overwhelming mandate from the American people.”
