Ghanaians have voted for John Mahama to be their next President after the eights year rule of Nana Akufo Addo.
Mr. Mahama of the National Democratic Congress who had previously service as vice President and one term President between 2012-2017, according to internal results, garnered 56% of the vote against, while the ruling party New Patriotic Party incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia scored 41%. The Electoral Commission is yet to release the official.
The NDC also won the majority in the parliamentary election.
Mr. Mahamudu Bawumia speaking on Sunday accepted defeat in Saturday’s election, said he has called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him.
“The people have voted for change,” said Bawumia.
The elections came amid the country’s worst economic crisis in a generation, which saw the cost of basic goods shoot up, while young people struggled to get jobs and the country was unable to repay its debts.
The pattern of voting was a rebuke on the ruling party, many Ghanaians had looked forward to December 7 to get rid of the NPP
“Akufo Addo in eight years brought nothing but hardships to us,” said Lena Oclo, a business woman.
“Prices of commodities skyrocketed amidst low income, and as if that was not enough we paid multiple taxes, which the government couldn’t justify it’s uses amidst corrupt practices.
“We expect Mahama to turn things around, Ghanaians have really suffered.”
