World soccer governing body FIFA voted Wednesday to confirm the hosting rights for the the 2030 and 2034 World Cup tournaments.
The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco with the opening three matches in South America.
While Saudi Arabia who were the sole bidder for 2034 got FIFA’s nod much to the excitement of Saudi football officials who have promised to put up a show of a life time.
“Football lives in our hearts so to host a FIFA World Cup is the ultimate honor and we have been working towards this for a very long time,” said Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser Al Misehal.
“We promise to put on a tournament of a lifetime that leaves a lasting positive
impact for the future of football, for players, and for fans.”
However, the Saudi World Cup is a concer for European clubs and human rights groups.
The European clubs will likely not welcome any attempt to stage the Saudi World Cup in the winter, due to high temperature in the summer.
European Leagues are already involved in a legal row with FIFA over what it sees as a lack of consultation over the international calendar, and the PA news agency understands there are huge concerns among leagues over the fixture chaos a winter World Cup in 2034 would cause.
