Osun State governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an investigation into the death sentence handed to two young men in his domain who were accused of stealing a fowl and eggs.
The men identified as Segun Olowookere and Morakinyo Sunday who were teenagers when they allegedly the committed the crime in 2010. They were sentenced to death after their trial by a High Court sitting in Okuku Osun State in 2014.
Presiding judge Justice Jide Falola found the two young men guilty on charges of three counts conspiracy, robbery and steal and were sentenced to death by hanging.
The parents of Sunday Olowookere launched an appeal, and the matter came to governor Adeleke via the social media.
“I have received the report of a case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun state for stealing a fowl,” Adeleke wrote on his X page Wednesday.
“Consequently, I have directed the attorney general and commissioner for justice, Osun state, to commence full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man.
“Osun is a land of justice and equity and must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives. I assure members of the public that this matter is receiving my direct attention with every sense of urgency also attached to our response to the matter.”
