The Handball Federation of Nigeria is knocking around for funds to ensure that its boys and girls team attend the Confederation of African Handball Beach Handball Championship/Qualifiers, billed for Zanzibar, Tanzania between February 20-24, 2025.
Nigeria boys and girls team need to attend the championships, because that is where they can earn qualification for the International Handball Federation IHF U-17 Boys and Girls Beach Handball Championship in Hamammet, Tunisia in June 2025. And the World Youth Games (The Junior Olympics) in Dakar, Senegal in 2026.
“HFN is knocking on all doors to ensure we attend the championship in Zanzibar,” said a federation official.
“This is because it is basically the future of our handball we are hoping to take to Zanzibar, it is not only qualification for the Youth Olympic we are looking but building the team for the 2028 Olympics.
“So we are hoping that the National Sports Commission will take interest in what we are doing and support our efforts. The team is not expensive just 14 persons including coaches and officials.”
HFN president Mr. Sam Ocheho has made beach handball one of his development priorities. Last year he made sure the Nigerian senior team participated in the first Africa Beach Games in Sal, Cape Verde. Out of 10 countries Nigeria finished fourth.
“We should invest in our youths now so that by 2028 they would have matured into a strong team that can contest for the medal.” added the official.
