Two security guards have been detained by the Ogun State police for allegedly setting ablaze a 44-year-old man, identified as Basiru Aliu in Agura Sabo, Sagamu area of the state.
The security guards identified as Segun Sodiya and Segun Abatan told the police they mistook the victim for a thief.
According to the Ogun State police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the victim was helping his employer move property to a new local in Ijokun, when the suspected accosted him and took laws into their hands. They violently attacked Mr. Aliu before setting him ablaze, however, he survived the ordeal.
She said the employer of the victim identified as Fatai Ifekoys reported the incident to the police
“Aliu was reportedly helping his employer, Fatai Ifekoya, move belongings from his former residence to a new site in Ijokun at around 7 a.m. on Monday,” said Odutola in a statement Wednesday.
“While carrying out the task early on Monday, Aliu was said to have been violently attacked by Sodiya and Abatan, security guards employed by one of the residents, Kingsley Nwabueze.
“The duo allegedly poured a flammable substance on Aliu and set him on fire, believing he was trying to steal the items he was transporting for his employer.”
She added that the suspected would be charged with attempted murder.
