The unending drama in Nigeria football took a shocking turn Tuesday when the Nigeria Football Federation appointed Eric Chelle Sekou as coach of the Super Eagles.
Why the NFF chose to gamble with Chelle Sekou who was sacked by the Malian Football Federation last year remain a mystery Nigerian fans are still trying to wrap their heads around.
Chelle Sekou born in Cote d’Ivoire to a French father and a Malian mother, based on his coaching antecedents appears to be another wild goose chase by the NFF, but perhaps he can prove the doubters wrong and deliver in this the biggest job he has ever had to handle.
He has never won a trophy as national team player for Mali and as a club coach. He played only five times for the Malian Eagles.
The NFF said he was recommended by its technical and development committee and this recommendation was endorsed on Tuesday, January 7 by the NFF Executive Committee.
Before the Super Eagles job Chelle Sekou was coach of Algerian club side MC Oran. During his playing career in France Lens was the only top club he played between 2008 and 2011.
The 47-year-old who led Mali to last eight at the 2023 African Cup of Nations will resume work immediately
and he is faced with task of rescuing the chequred campaign Super Eagles 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign with the next round of matches (Matchdays 5 & 6) taking place in March.
