Top Norwegian football clubs have voted to eliminate the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
According to Cato Haug who is the chairman of the Norwegian Norsk Toppfotball Board, the clubs believe that VAR was not working well for them.
“We see that the technology has potential, but we see through today’s discussion and subsequent voting that the majority of our clubs believe that the current version of VAR does not work well enough,” Cato Haug said in a statement.
According to a statement by Norsk Toppfotball, the vote results show that a majority of the clubs in the elite league and the second division league do not want to continue VAR in Norwegian football.
The voting results show that 19 participants supported the idea of abolishing VAR, while 13 were opposed to the measure.
Norsk Toppfotball is the organization that represents the 32 football teams participating in Norway’s top two divisions.
Earlier, the Swedish Football Federation decided not to use the VAR system. Clubs in England where VAR had stirred up a lot of controversy had considered scrapping VAR.
