An Iraqi man who publicly burned the Quran several times in Sweden has been killed in a shootout.
Swedish media reported that Salwan Momika, 38, was killed Wednesday night in Södertälje, i a city near Stockholm, the Swedish capital.
Momika staged several burnings of Islam’s holy book in Sweden in 2023, stirring national controversy and raising anger in several Muslim nations, with anti-Swedish riots and unrest cropping up in response.
Police said they were alerted to a shooting and later found a man with gunshot wounds. He died shortely afterwards.
As reported by Swedish media, prosecutor Rasmus Öhman confirmed that five people have been arrested. Police said they are investigating reports that the killing may have been streamed live on social media.
Momika came to Sweden from Iraq in 2018 and was granted a three-year residence permit in 2021.
