Arsenal great Ian Wright has urged pundits to lay off critiquing Myles Lewis-Skelly who copied Erling Haaland goal celebration during their 5-1 trashing of Manchester City in last Sunday’s Premier League game.
Lewis-Skelly, 18, scored he third goal of the routing and in an apparently mockery of Haaland, copied his style of celebration. But this did not go down well with pundits like Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and also the Premier League’s chief football officer, Tony Scholes.
“There’s a balance. I think we all like to see celebrations. Some of the celebrations have been very funny, entertaining, but there’s a line. Once it crosses over into mockery or criticism then we would need to deal with it,” Scholes said.
But weighing on the matter Ian Wright stated: “We need to protect Myles Lewis-Skelly at all costs.
“British media have found their new target and are already taking aim. Instead of hailing up this 18-year-old’s impressive breakout season so far, his celebration in response to Haaland has become a point of contention.”
Also, Rio Ferdinand had his say: “I saw Gary Neville say it’s [Lewis-Skelly’s celebration] disrespectful. Bro, some of the biggest, most iconic moments in Premier League history aren’t about football.
“Roy Keane in the tunnel with Vieira. Martin Keown with Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Adebayor running to the Arsenal fans. Me slapping Mr Bennet.
“Come on man. Gary Neville, one of his biggest moments was doing that [grabbing the Manchester United badge] to Liverpool fans after my goal.”
