With only a few days left for the 2025 Princess Mabel Madojiemu Schools Athletics Championships, officials have been overwhelmed by the number of entries for the meet bill to run February 20-22.
The competition, which will hold at the Igueben Grammar School sports ground, Igueben Edo State will coincide with the 40th anniversary celebration of the coronation of the Onojie of Igueben.
It is the first time the championships will hold outside Benin City and as at Monday, over 50 school from Edo central and north have register to participate.
“We are looking at close to a thousand youth athletes and this is totally overwhelming, but we will see how we can manage the situation,” said Mutiu Oluwa technical director of the Princess Mabel Madojiemu Schools Athletics Championships.
He said the venue has been made ready for the competition and they are expecting a good outing.
Meanwhile, former 400m runner and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria vice president, Fidelis Wadzani Gadzama has made a princely donation to enable successful outing of the competition.
“I really appreciate Gadzama’s contributions, it is so heart warming and encouraging,” said Princess Mabel Madojiemu.
Gadzama and Madojiemu were teammates during active days in track and field. They were both in the Nigerian team to the 2000 Olympics Games in Athens, Greece and other international contest.
