The 2025 Princess Mabel Madojiemu Schools Athletics Championships rolled off Friday in Igueben and the town folks have expressed delight at hosting the competition for the first time.
Schools from the locality are participating in the championships, some which had been unable to make the trip to Benin City in the previous editions. The young athletes will contest in the 100m, 200m, 400m and also the long jump, discus and shot-put throws.
“We are expecting a keenly contested competition, and the schools are ready and cooperative,” said coach Mutiu Oluwa technical director of the championships.
The Onojie of Igueben HRM Ehizogie Eluojierior 1 Onojie of Igueben who is the elder brother of Princess Madojiemu said he and his citizens are delighted to have the competition brought to their domain. He called on all Edo State citizens to support what the former national 400m champion is doing to develop the youths through athletics.
Also former shot put and hammer thrower Tina Akowe who is from Igueben said she was delighted to have the competition come to her town, nothing that Mabel Madojiemu was doing something most former athletes are unwilling to do.
