The police in Accra the Ghanaian capital are prosecuting two Nigerians who allegedly kidnapped an elderly American woman and extorted money from her bank accounts.
According to media reports the suspects Emmanuel Adedoyin Adebayor, a trader, and Esther Ogbonna, a beautician were alleged to have lured the 80-year-old Christine Nelson to Ghana and held her hostage in a building at Tema Community 11 in Accra.
FBI agents at the American embassy informed the Ghanaian police about the missing case of Miss Nelson and subsequently began investigations, which led to the arrest of Adebayor and Ogbonna at a hotel in Larteh Akwapim. They were alleged to have collaborated with one Poromo who is at large.
Adebayor and Poromo have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, kidnapping and stealing before a high court. Ogbonna was charged as an accomplice.
Prosecutors told the court that Adebayor and his friend Poromo, withdrew $15,821.70 from the victim’s bank and also demanded a ransom of $150,000. They added that all the victim’s phones and her bank cards were seized from her, and she was also threatened.
Adebayor and Miss Nelson was reported to have met on Facebook. Adebayor deceived her he was an actor by the name Mark Hammond who have investments in gold and diamonds in South Africa.
