A Nigeria professional football player identified as Abubakar Lawal has died after allegedly falling from the third floor of a shopping mall in Kampala, Uganda.
Lawal,29, according to BBC reports had visited a female friend Omary Naima at the mall, she left him in her corner to prepare tea and shortly afterwards Lawal plunged to his death. Police are now investigating the circumstances surround the death of the player who is from Sokoto State.
“Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” police said.
The police have retrieved some items belonging to the deceased player, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets and training kit.
“Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the police added.
However, some other sources said the player died in motorbike accident.
Lawal played as a striker for Vipers Sports Club, which he joined in July 2022. In 2023, he helped Vipers win the league and cup double. He also had a stint with AS Kigali of Rwanda.
Vipers said in a statement: “Lawal (Man from Sokoto) was a unique person. He had a big heart of gold. He really cared about people and went out of his way to help. He was incredibly generous.”
