The police in Calabar, Cross River State manage to subdue a police inspector who returned from night duty and went on a shooting spree.
According to reports the Inspector identified as Effiong Bassey, shattered the peace of the Atakpa Divisional Police Station in Calabar on Sunday morning, and in the ensuing melee a 41-year-old civilian, Mrs. Ijoema Obot the wife of a retired officer was killed and two others sustained injuries.
“Inspector Bassey started acting strange on his return from duty post at a micro finance bank. He refused to hand over his weapon, he corked the AK-47 rifle and threatened to shoot his colleagues at the station,” said police sources.
A police tactical team was called in to handle the situation and upon sighting the team, Inspector Bassey opened fire and in the process the wife of the officers and the other were hit by flying bullets.
Cross River police spokesperson SP Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident. She said the situation was brought under control and the rampaging Inspector Bassey disarmed and taken into custody, while the cause of his strange behavior is being investigated.
