Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), officials have launched a manhunt for seven inmates who escaped from the Konton Karfe Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kogi State.
The incident, which occurred Monday morning saw about 12 awaiting trial inmates escaped from the facility, but five of them were recaptured. One Correctional officer was killed in the process
NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar, who confirmed the development said every necessary step has been taken to recapture the remaining 10 in the run.
“Twelve of the inmates in our custody at the Koton Karfe Medium Custodial Centre have escaped. They are all on awaiting trial but as I speak to you now, five have been captured.
“We are already working to capture the remaining inmates on the run.”
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, an investigation has been launched into the prison break.
“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation.
“As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining inmates and bring them to justice.”
