Up and coming teenage high jumper Treasure Omosivwe won the women high jump gold at the Niger Delta Sports Festival with a personal best of 1.69m.
In the final decided Monday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo, Akwa Ibom State the 15-year-old Omosivwe showed her consistency in the event she has dominated in the junior category, since being discovered at the Princess Mabel Madojiemu Secondary Athletics Championships in Edo State three years ago.
Omosivwe and second placed Francess Ajagbawa of Delta State put up a stiff contest, but Ajagbawa had to settle for silver with a jump of 1.66m, while Edet Clergy of Akwa Ibom won the bronze with 1.60m.
Omosivwe’s new PB of 1.69m is the fourth best performance in the top ten of Nigerian high jump.
“She is a young athlete we must help grow. She is just 15 and in the next three years I believe she will be competiting at the world level, but we need to follow her up,” said coach Mutiu Oluwa.
Omosivwe will be missing the National Sports Festival in May due to her final secodary schools exams. But she is hopeful of competiting in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria national trials later in July.
