Terrorist suspected to be members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) swooped on a military base in the Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, killing seven soldiers, taking many others captive, before setting the base on fire.
The incident which occurred about 3.00am on Monday May 12, caught the soldiers on guard by surprise. The invading ISWAP members seized three-gun trucks, and 70 motorcycles intended for counter-terrorism operations from the base.
“Many soldiers (unspecified numbers) were captured, and many has deserted, the ones that escaped towards Dikwa are currently at the 24-task force brigade. ISWAP has taken over Marte.
“All gunshots were heard in Dikwa and the Nigeria Air Force were seen hovering the general area. Numbers of casualty unspecified yet,” Sahara Reporters, quoted military sources
Commenting on the attacks in the region in recent times Borno State governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State said in a statement signed by his spokesperson Dauda Iliya Tuesday: “The recent surge in attacks will not deter our resolve to tackle the scourge of the 16-year-long insurgency.
“I urge the people of Borno to remain resilient and prayerful. This is a partial eclipse and we shall overcome it, Insha Allah.
“These acts of terror are deeply condemnable. The recent tragic loss of our education staff, gallant troops, and innocent civilians is a painful reminder of the challenges we continue to face.
“I am more determined than ever to support the military, security agencies, and our volunteer forces in the fight to end terrorism and insurgency in our state,” the governor said.
Zulum concluded by extending thoughts and prayers to the families of the deceased, the wounded, and all citizens affected by the attacks.
