Nigeria army took the fight against terror to the Sambisa Forest hideout of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters.
The raid carried out on Thursday May 15 by a joint operation between the army troops of Operation Hadin Kai and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Borno State. The operation targeted terrorist strongholds in Garin Malam Ali, Garin Glucose and Ukuba.
The troops successfully invaded the strongholds, forcing the insurgents to flee and abandon their arms and ammunition. Recovered items include various weapons and IED-making equipment. The exploitation of the Sambisa Forest is ongoing.
Meanwhile the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, has assured Nigerians the military and other security agencies are firmly in control of the situation in the North-East despite the resurgence of insurgent activities in the region.
“The pockets of attacks should not be a cause for concern as the military and security agencies are firmly in control,” Mr Musa said while addressing journalists on Thursday in Maiduguri.
Mr Musa said he was in Maiduguri to reassess the renewed attacks and engage stakeholders on solutions despite the defence ministers and service chiefs’ visit earlier.
“Security is not a one-man business,” said the defence chief. “I appeal to everyone to join the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP, banditry, kidnapping, and all forms of criminality for the peace and development of our country.”
