For the first time in recent times Anambra State is winning medals in the swimming event and it was down to efforts of Joseph Odobeatu.
Anambra swimmers got a silver and bronze medal in a sport dominated by Bayelsa and Delta, but according to Mr. Odobeatu popularly known as O’jez, the efforts of the swimmers from Anambra should be celebrated because this is the start of many more achievements to come from them
Mr. Odobeatu who is the Anambra State Swimming Association chairman said: “It is a modest start for Anambra swimming; we haven’t won medals before in the event we had a modest preparation for the Gateway Games.
“But by the next National Sports Festival in Enugu we would be aiming for more results. Because everything we are doing, we must have to do it well.”
Also speaking Anambra State Sports Commission executive chairman Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum said he was elated with the achievements in the pool.
“Though Ojez promised us gold medals in swimming, it was heartwarming our swimmers won some medals.
“Overall, we didn’t have a good preparation for the Gateway Games. But we are going to get our acts together for the 2026 National Sports Festival in Enugu.”
