Kano State sports commission has been thrown into mourning, following the death of 19 members of its contingent to the just concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The tragic twist to Kano’s participation at the Gateway Games occurred Saturday morning when the coastal bus the party was traveling got involved in a lone auto crash.
Painfully, they were just 50km from Kano City when the accident happened at Dakstalle Kano. The dead include athletes , journalists, medical personnel and administrators.
A video of the scene of the accident circulating online shows the lifeless bodies of the victims lying on the ground, under a bridge, indicating that the bus seen with a collapsed roof must have fallen over the bridge.
Kano finished 13 on the medals table winning 6 gold 13 silver and 10 bronze 13th.
Kano State commissioner for sports Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, said in a statement: “This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano.”
