Mokwa Niger State is still reeling from the effect of last Thursday’s devasting floods caused by heavy rainfall and a collapsed dam.
Niger State government officials said on Sunday more than 153 bodies have been recovered so far, while 500 other persons are still missing and according to the Mokwa Local Government deputy chairman Musa Kimboku, there was no hope of finding any survivors.
Meanwhile the Niger State Government said Sunday in statement signed by the Secretary to the Government of Niger State (SSG) Abubakar Usman in Minna that the government is working to bring relief to the people.
“This unfortunate disaster has affected numerous homes and individuals, and the government remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting affected families and communities.
“The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in collaboration with local authorities and volunteers, continues to work around the clock to provide relief to the affected people.”
The statement added that while the government shares in the pain of every family that has been affected, “we urge members of the public to remain calm and sensitive in their communications, particularly on social media and other platforms.
“This is a time of mourning and collective grief for us as a state as spreading unverified or sensational information only adds to the sorrow and confusion already being experienced.”
