Kano State government has declared Monday as a day of mourning for the 22 victims of the auto crash involving Kano’s contingent to the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The incident occurred Saturday when the bus they were travelling fell off a bridge and causing the heavy causality, 20 persons including athletes, coaches and journalists lost their lives.
Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the bus driver probably fatigued by the long drive from Ogun State lost control while crossing over the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway.
Also the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident may have been the result of “fatigue and excessive speed” following a long overnight journey.
Meanwhile the Kano State government said it would compensate the families of the victims with N1m and some food supplies.
Meanwhile a delegation of Ogun State government officials led by the deputy governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele paid a condolence visit to the Kano State government on Sunday. Salako-Oyedele announced a N31m donations to families of the victims.
“This is a devastating loss for Kano State, for the athletics community, and especially for the families and friends of the individuals who were affected by this tragic incident. We also pray for the speedy recovery of the other people who are in the hospital at this time, who rushed to the aid of the victims,” said the Ogun State deputy governor who was received by her Kano State counterpart Abdu Salam Gwarzo.
