“Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” exponent Mike Ejeagha dies at 95, Tinubu, Mbah pay tribute

Popular Igbo folk musician Mike Ejeagha, has died at the age of 95. He died Friday night at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, due to illness his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha revealed.
“My father passed away due to a long-standing ailment,” Emma confirmed.
Ejeagha, fondly called “Gentleman Mike,” was born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
He became a household name in the 1960s with hit songs like “Omekagu”, “Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma”, and “Ka Esi Le” “Onye Isi Oche”, the latter enjoying a viral TikTok revival in 2024 through a trending dance challenge.
His hit tune “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo ” was recently given a bounce on social media by skitmaker Brain Jotter.
Reacting to his passing President Bola Tinubu in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga presidential adviser on Information and Strategy said: “May the spirit and values of Gentleman Mike Ejeagha’s music continue to remind us that music has the power to revive, heal and redirect energy towards worthy causes that help build our nation,”
Enugu State governor Peter Mbah added: “I’m profoundly saddened by the death of music icon, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha. Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State.
“He was one of the finest musicians of his generation with an easygoing personality and humility that belied his towering celebrity status. I will always cherish fond memories of the time spent in his company – the warmth and wisdom he radiated; the joy he found in the ordinary.”
