Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has come under criticism for his handling of the nation team so far, but defender Bruno Onyemaechi has assured Nigerian fans the Malian-born manager knows what he is doing.
Fans have been unimpressed with team performance after Chelle failed to beat Zimbabwe in their last World Cup qualifiers and then scrapping up results in their Unity Cup and international friendly against Russia.
But Onyemaechi defended Eric Chelle saying: “In the few months I’ve worked with him, I can say he’s the right guy for the job,” Onyemaechi told TVC News Nigeria.
“There’s noise outside saying he doesn’t know what he’s doing, but if you come closer, you’ll know he’s the right guy for the job.”
Meanwhile Eric Chelle is concerned about how to build solid team that can rescued the Super Eagles 2026 World Cup campaign that is on slippery ground. He noted that one area he has to work on was the mentality of the team, especially when under pressure.
The World Cup qualifiers resume on September 1 for the Super Eagles with a home game against Rwanda, then on September 8 will play away to South Africa, before squaring up against Lesotho and Benin Republic in October. The team need to will all their remaining games to stand a chance of qualifying.
