Former 110m hurdler, Solomon Aliyu is the new head coach of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria effectively from June 30, 2025.
This development was contained in a letter of appointment signed by AFN secretary-general Israel Inwang Monday.
Aliyu a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police is expected to bring his wealth of experience as a coach for over 15 years to bear and also work in lockstep with the technical director of the AFN Gabriel Okon.
“Aliyu is a perfect fit for the position of the AFN head coach that has remained dormant for some time,” said an athletics official.
“He is vibrant and easy to approach so we are looking for a great turn around in the development of athletics in Nigeria.”
Aliyu is expected to lead the charge for the AFN’s coaching for excellence initiative.
According to the Federation Aliyu will
1. Oversee all national athletics coaching programs
2. Develop athlete development strategies
3. Prepare coaches for national & international competitions
4. Coordinate all AFN coaching activities
5. Propose high-performance frameworks
“We are confident that Coach Aliyu’s expertise will elevate Nigerian athletics to new heights, foster unity among our coaching community and drive excellence across all levels,” said the AFN secretary-general.
