Liverpool and Portugal striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva lost their lives in a car crash in the early hours of Thursday in Zamora Spain.
Diogo Jota, 28, and Andre Silva,25, who plays with Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel, were traveling in a Lamborghini car, which suffered a tyre blowout as they attempted to overtake another vehicle. The Lamborghini veered off the road, crashed and caught fire.
Diogo Jota recently got married to his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
Liverpool fans paid tribute to their fallen star laying flowers outside Anfield Stadium.
He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, helping them win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season.
Liverpool FC said in a statement they have been devastated by the “unimaginable loss.”
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who played alongside Jota, wrote on social media: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, you had just got married.
“I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo e Andre. We will miss you.”
NBA legend and LA Lakers power forward LeBron James, who is a minority owner of Liverpool, wrote on X “my prayers go out to his loved ones”.
Legendary tennis player Rafael Nadal described Jota’s death as “sad and painful news”.
“All my love, affection and support go out to his wife, children, family and friends at this difficult time,” the 22-time Grand Slam champion said.
