Nigeria’s king of the throws Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is itching to take on the world after breaking his own African record with a massive heave of 22.10m.
He achieved the feat which made him the first African man to break into the 22 meter mark at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, USA. The same venue he set the previous African record of 21.91m in 2024.
Enekwechi who is a two-time African Games and African Championships champion was third in the Oregon meet behind Joe Kovacs of the United States, who landed 22.48m, a world leading distance and second placed Roger Steen with a personal best of 22.11m.
With that performance Enekwechi is hoping to finish in the top three at the World Championship billed for Tokyo, Japan September 13-21.
He was seventh placed at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the first Nigeria thrower to finish in the top eight.
“I’ve been chasing this moment for years. To finally break 22 meters and make history for Africa—it means the world to me.
” I know there’s still more in the tank, and this is just the beginning,” said Enekwechi.
