Nigerian athletes are yet to get their supplies of running shoes and trainers for the Confederation of African Athletics Championship.
The competition began Wednesday at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with every other country well kitted and prepared.
But the story is not the same with Nigerian athletes. Apart from the running vest presented to them on Tuesday, there are no spikes, throws shoes and trainers supplied to the athletes. Some of the athletes do not even have track suits, they were seen with multi coloured clothing mingling with others who were lucky to be clothed.
And this has raised some concern for the athletes some of whom are scrambling around to get running shoes.
“We have not been supplied running shoes and trainers, some of us are lucky to have old ones to fall back on and so many others do not have even do have track suits not to talk of shoes,” said one of the athletes Wednesday morning.
Athletics Federation of Nigeria officials are keeping a sealed lip on the issue, but an official of federation pointed at the direction of the National Sports Commission.
“It’s the NSC that is in charge, we can only hope that something will be done before we start having our events.
“This is something that can potentially embarrass our country.”
However, it was gathered that arrangements are being made to supply the athletes the equipment they need. But no timeline was given.
