Nigeria has been a good host for the CAA U-18/U-20 Championships, which will come to an end on Sunday.
Confederation of African Athletics CEO Lamine Fati declared Saturday during a chat with media representatives that Nigeria and the Local Organising Committee surpassed expectations in just two months the country was given to prepare for the hosting of the competition.
“We are grateful to Nigeria, within two months Nigeria has been able to put together a championships we thought would not hold this year,” said Mr. Fati.
“Though things have not been perfect but we are satisfied with what we are seeing and we can proudly tell people in Europe that we can also get things done,”
LOC chairman Hon. Bukola Olapade stated that it was the zeal to promote grassroots athletics development that encouraged Nigeria to take up the challenge of hosting.
“We had a group of dedicated people in the committee that made it all happen,”Olapade who is also the director general of the National Sports Commission added.
The Championships in day three had South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria in the top three of the U-18 medals table, while South Africa, Uganda and Nigeria are in the top three of the U-20 table. About 45 countries are participating in the championships.
