Ghana Athletics Association will send a team to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria trials billed to hold August 1-3 at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
The AFN is desperate to have the Ghanaian 4x100m and 4x400m teams and also that of Benin Republic and Togo to participate at the trials with a view of boosting the chances of Nigerian relay teams qualifying for the World Championships billed for Tokyo, Japan September 13-17.
“We have received an invitation, and we are sending our 4x100m and 4x400m teams. We are going to be in Lagos,” said coach Emmanuel Otoo of the GAA.
According to AFN technical director Gabriel Okon, Nigeria is pursing qualification for its 4×100, 4x400m and mixed relay teams and it is crucial they take part every available meet within the qualification window to have the teams compete and make the world top 16.
“We have between now and August 24 deadline to get our teams qualified.
“We are banking on the presence of teams like Ghana, Benini and Togo to be present in Lagos and compete with our teams.
“Apart from this we are also eyeing the CAA region two meeting in August in Ghana.
“For it’s not just qualifying we have some new faces in our teams that need to perfect their exchanges.”
