Human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Omoyele Sowore, regained his freedom after two days of detention at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Sowore was invited by the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit Wednesday but was not allowed to go back home. His supporters staged protests Friday in five States.
Sowore who confirmed his release on his Facebook page said his detention as “illegal and unjust.”
“The Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention.
“However, it is nothing to celebrate but thank you for not giving up!”
Speaking Friday Commissioner of Police (CP) for the Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, said Sowore was detained because of petitions against him.
“The two petitions were shown to him in the presence of his lawyers. The issue now is that he refused to make a statement in the presence of his lawyers. It is in the record.
“And the procedure under the Nigerian law is very clear. When an allegation is made against you, you are called upon; you have a duty to put down your own position,” Shogunle said.
