Nigerian sprinters Olatunde Olaolu and Chioma Nweke dominated the men and women 100m race of the CAA region two athletics championships ongoing at the University of Ghana sports complex Accra, Ghana.
In the men’s race Olatunde was off the blocks with a good start and maintained his lead to finish at 10.60secs, it was a slower time than the 10.56secs he did in the heats.
He beat Ghana’s Arthur Kevin Pantsill who ran 10.63secs, Abdul Razak Kone of Cote d’Ivoire was third with 10.71secs.
Nweke lived up to expectations in the women’s 100m as she stormed to a 11.62secs win with a 0.5 wind to bag the gold. Newly wedded Olayinka Olajide took the second spot at secured 11.72secs. Gambia’s Sey Isatou in 12.00secs took the bronze.
The upset of the day perhaps was in the women’s 400m where veteran Patience Okon George was overwhelmed at the home stretch by Sita Sibiri of Burkina Faso who zoomed to a 51.74 time Okon George finished at 52.09secs, Favour Onyah was third with 52.24secs.
In the men’s race Gafari Badmus put the smiles back on Nigerian officials’ faces when he finished 45.53secs to win the men’s race. Ezekiel Asuquo was second with 46.38secs, while Ghana’s Mordecai Achepong placed third with 46.63secs.
Up and coming Nigeria high jumper Treasure Omosivwe won her first international medal with a jump of 1.70m. Her closest competitor Badello Odette of Burkina Faso stopped at 1.50m. Omosivwe attempted 1.76m, in bid to surpass her personal best of 1.75, but that’s going to be an attempt for another day.
The Nigeria women’s quartet took the 4x100m gold, while the men’s team came from behind to beat Ghana to the gold.
The events come to an end Tuesday.
