Former AC Milan coach Fabio Capello said the Serie A giants are taking a gamble by signing Victor Boniface.
The Super Eagles striker arrived in Milan Friday for medicals and then after he is expected to sign a season long loan deal from Bayer Leverkusen at a cost of €5m, with an option to buy for an additional €24m.
Boniface was a third choice for Milan after they failed to land Ramus Hojlund from Manchester United and Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus.
However, Capello writing in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column, noted that Milan should have gone for a player who is grounded in Serie A since it will take Boniface some time to settle down.
“Boniface coming in from Bayer Leverkusen will need time to settle into Serie A, while the Hojlund from Manchester United would have been a ready-to-go striker given his experience with Atalanta.”
“When I read that the reasons behind this choice would largely be due to financial reasons, I wonder: A club like Milan, which has brought in close to €200m from sales this window – Shouldn’t they have invested in Hojlund? The one who will have to take care of scoring the goals for the Scudetto.”
