Nigerian music diva Tiwa Savage has questioned the naming of Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido as the three biggest Afrobeat acts in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview Tiwa Savage argued that the list is not complete without the inclusion of Grammy Award winner Temilade Openiyi a.k.a Tems. Nigerian music buffs in online submissions had list Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido. Out of the trio, only Burna Boy has won an individual Grammy Awards.
“It’s unfair to have that conversation about the Big 3 and not mention someone like Tems,” Tiwa said.
Tems has collaborated with major international artists and has been a driving force in Afrobeats’ global popularity
In a recent interview Tems stated that Nigeria women are not given their dues respect in music. She reflected on the early years of her career, revealing that it was difficult for her to be taken seriously as a woman in the male-dominated industry.
She said, “I realised that there’s always a cost. There’s always a price that you pay. And a lot of those prices I wasn’t willing to pay and there wasn’t a lot of options.”
