Panic spread quicky in Jerusalem Monday after gunmen opened fire on a city bus, killing six people including a pregnant woman, many others were left injured in the attack.
The incident occurred at about 10.15am around the Yigal Yadin area in Jerusalem, when two gunmen armed with “Carlo” a Palestinian made machine gun and knives appeared from nowhere and shot at the bus, but they were eliminated by two bystanders, one a civilian armed with his grandfather’s pistol and the other an Israeli Defence Force agent who was on guard around the area.
There was commotion in the street as people took cover to avoid been hit by bullets.
A witness who alighted from the bus just before the horror said: ‘ I got off the bus about a minute before the attack. I was sitting at the station when I heard a long burst of gunfire. Suddenly, everyone was running.
‘There was a lot of chaos. I called the police, but no one answered. They called back five minutes later. I didn’t see the terrorists.”
Bomb disposal units were deployed to make sure the area was safe as forensic teams gathered evidence. Authorities rushed blood supplies from the central bank in Ramla for urgent needs, reports said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his national security adviser visited the scene of the carnage.
Meanwhile, Israel’s army is said to have closed all checkpoints between East Jerusalem and the West Bank after the attacks. Roads leading to the scene were also blocked. Soldiers were also operating in areas of Ramallah in the West Bank to conduct interrogations and ‘thwart terrorism.’
Hamas though praised the efforts of the two terror suspects, did not take responsibility for the attack.
The EU on Monday spoke out against the attack. Spokesman Anouar El Anouni said: ‘We condemn this attack, as we condemn all loss of lives. We call for de-escalation, and this shows how necessary and critical a ceasefire is.
The war in Gaza has sparked a surge of violence in both the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Israel.
