Shooter Tyler Robinson and Charlie Kirk

Tyler Robinson in a text message to his transgender roommate has revealed the reason he shot and killed Charlie Kirk on September 10, while he was making a speech at the Utah Valley University.
The killing of the rightwing influencer sparked an outrage in the American political circle. The 22-year-old Robinson was arrested two days after the killing when his mother recognised his surveilance camera image put out by the FBI. He was taken into custody after his father contacted the police.
He was charged to Court on Tuesday where text message to his roommate and partner were admiited as evidence against him. The partner was not named in the charging documents that contained the narrative of the shooting and were made public Tuesday when authorities charged Robinson with capital murder and other counts. He could face the death penalty.
Prosecutors allege Robinson used a bolt-action rifle to shoot Kirk in the neck on the campus in Orem, about 64 kilometres south of Salt Lake City. DNA on the trigger of the rifle matched Robinson, according to Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray. The rifle belongs to Robinson’s grandfather.
Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, was a prominent force in politics credited with energising the Republican youth movement and helping Donald Trump win back the White House in 2024. He gained a large following through social media, his podcast and campus events that featured him responding to a line of questioners who could query and debate him on any topic.
Text conversation
Robinson: drop what you are doing, look under my keyboard.
[When the roommate looked under the keyboard, there was a note that allegedly read: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”]
Roommate: “What?????????????? You’re joking, right????
Robinson: I am still ok my love but am stuck in Orem for a little while longer yet. Shouldn’t be long until I can come home, but I gotta grab my rifle still. To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you.
Roommate: you weren’t the one who did it right????
Robinson: I am, I’m sorry
Roommate: I thought they caught the person?
Robinson: no, they grabbed some crazy old dude, then interrogated someone in similar clothing. I had planned to grab my rifle from my drop point shortly after, but most of that side of town got locked down. Its quiet, almost enough to get out, but theres one vehicle lingering.
Roommate: Why?
Robinson: Why did I do it?
Roommate: Yeah
Robinson: I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.
“To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you,” Robinson wrote in another text to his partner.
