A middle-aged woman set herself on fire and later died in the hospital in what appeared to be an act of suicide.
According to reports the woman had gone to the house of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa in Bauchi, requesting to see his daughter Yelwa Abubakar Balewa who is the chairperson of the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency.
Eyewitness account said the woman was distressed on being told that Ms. Yelwa Abubakar Balewa was not available. She went to the entrance of the building and douse herself with the petrol she had brought with her and then lit a match.
Efforts by bystanders to put out the fire proved futile and the unidentified woman suffered major burns and was rushed to the Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
According to the Bauchi State police spokesperson Ahmed Wakil investigations so far revealed that the woman suffered mental health issues after giving birth to her last child.
“She was rescued alive and taken to ATBUTH, where she was admitted and her statement taken before she later passed away.
“The Command commiserates with her family and prays for Allah’s comfort and strength in this difficult time.”
