Cameroon opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has called on President Paul Biya to make the important phone call of conceding last Sunday’s presidential election.
Tchiroma Bakary an ex-cabinent member in Biya’s government claimed victory in the October 12 elections and has called on the Biya who has ruled Cameroon for 43 years, his government and all institutions to respect the will of the people.
“We call on the regime in power to show greatness and to honour the truth of the ballot box with a long-awaited gesture: that phone call of congratulations which will demonstrate the political maturity of our nation and the future strength of our democracy,” said Tchiroma.
Bakary, 79, said he has scored a landslide victory over the incumbent 92 years old Biya who was seeking for an eighth term in office.
“Today, it is with deep emotion and immense pride that I address you. Together, we have made history,” he said. “During this campaign, I have seen a Cameroon standing tall,” he said, thanking Cameroonians. He called those who protected their vote “the true heroes of this victory.
“I call on all institutions, all administrative authorities, all officials not to make themselves enemies of the people they are meant to serve.
“The time of fear, manipulation and false calculations is over. The only camp that matters today is that of Cameroon,” the candidate added, addressing security forces, the youth, teachers, workers, farmers, soldiers, journalists and the diaspora.
“Together, we shall turn the page, we shall reconcile our nation, rebuild our institutions and open the path to a just, dignified and fraternal future,” he added.
