African Action Congress founder and activist Omoleye Sowore was picked up Thursday by the police concerning his role in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protests, which rocked Abuja and other parts of the country on Monday.
Sowore was arrested outside the Federal High Court in Abuja where he had gone to show solidarity with detained Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu who appeared at a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja Thursday for his ongoing terrorism trial.
Speaking on the arrest Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said Sowore who was the convener of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest need to face charges just like others who are already remanded in prison custody on breach of peace charges.
Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, his brother Emmanuel Kanu and ten others are facing charges.
“If we move from there to charge some people to court and leave the person who led them to commit that act, more like their leader, the elite protester who told them and took them into the restricted area, that would not be fair,” Mr. Hundeyin stated.
“And that’s why, in the spirit of fair play and to ensure that justice is served, Omoyele Sowore was arrested today.”
He assured that Sowore will not be detained beyond the legally stipulated period, adding that he would be arraigned.
“Like the others, he wouldn’t spend time with us. He wouldn’t spend up to 24 hours with us. Once we wrap up the charges, he’s going to be prosecuted.
“In fact, if everything goes right, our plan is to ensure that he’s prosecuted today. He goes to court today.”
