Two men suspected to have participated in the audacious theft of French Crown Jewels from the Louvre Museum, have been arrested by the French police.
According to investigators the suspects were arrested Saturday evening in Paris as the prepare to board flights to Algeria and Mali respectively.
Four men took part in the heist which happened in broad daylight Sunday October 20 at about 9.30am. The thieves escaped, taking nine priceless pieces of royal jewellery valued at $102million.
The operation lasted less than seven minutes. The gang fled on two scooters waiting outside, carrying a trove of emerald, sapphire, and diamond-encrusted jewels once worn by French royals including Queen Marie-Amélie, Empress Marie-Louise, and Empress Eugénie.
Police sources said the suspects who are in their 30s are from Seine-Saint-Denis, north of Paris, and may have been part of a four-man burglary team hired by a criminal organisation or art smuggling network. Two other members of the gang remain at large.
The Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that “the investigation is moving quickly” but declined to confirm whether any of the jewels have been recovered. She criticised media leaks, saying they “hinder the effort to locate the stolen artefacts and those still at large.”
