A boxer who decided to exhibit his pugilist skill on a carpenter is cooling off in police detention after he struck a carpenter he had a dispute with over burst soccer ball.
The boxer known locally as Bintin delivered a killer blow to the carpenter’s head after they rowed over the punctured ball in the Adamo area of Ikorodu, Lagos.
According to eyewitnesses, the carpenter known in the area as Yellow, accidentally punctured the ball belonging to the boxer’s young son. Bintin known to have a bad temper was furious when he got wind of the ball going flat.
He confronted the carpenter accusing him of deliberately damaging his child’s ball. The row soon turned into a fisticuff and both men were pulled apart. The Chief of the community intervened and the carpenter agreed to replace the ball.
But unknown to community members Bintin was still enraged he ran after Yellow on his way to purchase a new ball and struck him on the forehead. The carpenter slumped and was later rushed to the Agbowa General Hospital. Doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
Bintin gave himself up to the police at the Imota Police Station, where he was taken into custody.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, assuring that the suspect remains in custody.
“Divisional Police Officers do not have the authority to release a murder suspect. I have spoken with the Divisional Head, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for further investigation,” she said.
